In Reaktion darauf wurden auch in der Museumslandschaft vielerorts umfangreiche audiovisuelle Sammlungen angelegt und bis heute weitergeführt. Trotz dieser institutionellen Einbettung unterscheiden sich <em><span style='font-family:"Georgia","serif"'>Museen audiovisueller Objekte</span></em> von anderen musealen Sammlungen: Fotos, Filme oder Audiodokumente führten lange Zeit ein Schattendasein als Arbeitsbehelfe oder als dokumentarische Beigaben – dies prägt bis heute ihren Objektstatus.<br><br>Entgegen dieser Tendenz, setzt sich das von den <em><span style='font-family:"Georgia","serif"'>Multimedialen Sammlungen </span></em>am Universalmuseum Joanneum Graz veranstaltete Symposium auf archivologischen, politischen und restauratorischen Ebenen kritisch-konstruktiv mit audiovisuellen Sammlungen in Museen auseinander und versucht darüber, die weitreichenden Funktionen gewachsener multimedialer Sammlungen und deren vielschichtige zeit- und kulturgeschichtliche Bedeutung zu thematisieren und zu betonen.
