analogen Fotografien aufbewahren, stehen daher seit einiger Zeit vor einer
grossen Herausforderung: Ihre Sammlungen wachsen stetig und teilweise
exponentiell an. Und zugleich steigt die Nachfrage nach Digitalisierungen, um
die Bilder besser zugaenglich zu machen. Es ist die Aufgabe dieser
Institutionen, die Fotografien in ihren unterschiedlichen Verwendungsweisen und
Entstehungskontexten zu erhalten und der Wissenschaft und dem interessierten
Publikum zugaenglich zu machen. Mit der massenhaften Produktion von Fotografien
im 20. Jahrhundert ist die Bewahrung und Erschließung der Fotografie in ihrer
gesamten Bandbreite zu einer kostspieligen Aufgabe geworden, welche in Zukunft

beantworten, da die Fotografie nicht nur als aesthetisches Produkt gesehen
werden darf, sondern ebenso als Medium der Kommunikation und des
Wissenstransfers zu gelten hat. Die Bewertung von Fotografien ist ein komplexes
Unternehmen und auch abhaengig von den Zielsetzungen und den Moeglichkeiten der
aufbewahrenden Institutionen, die den Schwerpunkt oft entweder auf die
dokumentarische oder auf die kuenstlerisch-aesthetische Bedeutung legen. Zudem
wirken sich konservatorische Massnahmen auf die Kosten aus, weshalb die

„heisses Eisen“. Die Forschenden wuerden am liebsten nichts und die Finanzchefs
